Gender stereotypes in advertising

 1) Find three adverts featuring women that are from the 1950s or 1960s. Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post. Hint: You may wish to look at car, perfume or cleaning products but can use any product you wish.

3) What stereotypes of women can you find in the 1950s and 1960s adverts?

- Women were seen as housewives, the roles they were played were always the same, it would consist on cleaning, cooking or taking care of her child. In one of the adverts the woman was talking about how gaining weight got men chasing her', this was telling women that is they aren't a part of the beauty standard then they aren't beautiful. Another one had a woman on the floor opening her Christmas gift, it's a hoover. The slogan says 'It's Christmas morning she'll be happier with a hoover'. The hoover is the stereotype that shes a 'housewife'. In the advert with the soap being the product, it's all just pink, trying to express 'femmininity'.

4) What stereotypes of women can you find in the post-2000s adverts?

- Women are very sexualized in the adverts, they are dressed very provocative, and a lot of inappropriate comments are made for example one of the adverts describes the woman as 'hot'. When looking for an advert every advert i could find consisted of women being talked about, dressed in a certain inappropriate way.

5) How do your findings suggest representations of gender have changed over the last 60 years?

- I feel as if representation of gender hasn't gotten much better for women. Adverts still consist of over-sexualized, provocative dressed women. A lot of the types an inappropriate slogan is used. Although now stereo-typically women aren't seen as housewives as much anymore which is an improvement however they are portrayed in a very bad manor.
