Magazines: Tatler CSP case study

 1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?

- The editor introduces the magazine as very positive and the finest. They introduce the magazine talking about their target audience (who are the richest/ upper class) . They mention 'shot to the very richest readers in the country'. Tatler is being looked at as a very high class, powerful magazine 'only for the richest' and those who 'spend a lot of money'.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine. List the key demographic details: age, gender, ABC1 % social class, HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

This suggests the average Tatler reader is of the higher/elite class.

- 1.2 million adults per month read Tatler. 

- The average HHI - £ 261, 572

- Average age - 41

- Female - 73%

- London / South / East - 70%

- ABC1 - 83%


3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?

 - So many Tatler readers love fashion, seeing how much they spend is shocking. In the past year £843 Million were spent on fashion. 96% of Tatler users/readers own designer fashion. 81% of them own designer shoes and accessories. 62% 'often buy fashion products after seeing them advertised in magazines'.

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that best fits Tatler?

- Every month is based on something fashion-like, the magazine expresses a femininity.

MEDIA LANGUAGE

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts? Here's a blog to help you with this as we haven't been able to complete the Photoshop typography lesson yet due to Covid-19.

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

- It's a very modern font like serif, rather than an older traditional font which catches the readers attention mainly a younger generation rather than an older generation. 

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

- The colours used are mainly just pink and white, this is to illustrate how 'feminine' the magazine is.

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. Mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression)

REPRESENTATION

1) What different groups of people are represented on the cover? (E.g. men/women/white people etc. Look at the image and text/cover lines to help here)

- Celebrities such as James Corden and Georgina Bevan are represented on the cover line. This attracts fans mainly from the celebrities that are being represented in the magazine to attract more treaders.

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
-Cover lines are showing how rich people live, they wear expensive clothes, onhly wear designer and rich jewlery, this is shown by 'Rules for the 21st century'
3) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?
 -There are stereotypes being reinforced, because only those who are rich get to buy the expensive clothes, shoes, brands, and parties.

4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?

- An op-positional reading to the Tatler cover could be, how it only has a target audience of the Upper class/ aristocrats. It's quite stereotypical, it bases  its topics about fashion, and lifestyle trying to make it as feminine as possible. 

SOCIAL & CULTURAL CONTEXT

1) What aspects of British life or people are NOT reflected in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')

Tatler only shows the life of a higher class and aristocrat British person, nothing of a normal, regular British person is shown.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?

-This magazine shows that Britain is overly posh, they try and make out that taking care of yourself, buying expensive clothes and accessories is the lifestyle the Brits live.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017? 

-People who are not of the aristocratic class or who aren't of the higher target class  would be offended.
