1) What was the objective of BBC3 when it was launched?

- BBC Three launched as a TV channel in 2003 and its remit was to provide "innovative" programming to a target audience of viewers between 16 and 34 years old:

2) Why did BBC3 go online-only in February 2016? 
- planned £100 million budget cut across the BBC, it was proposed that BBC Three be discontinued as a television service, and be converted to online only

3) How does Class meet the BBC's mission statement to 'inform, educate and entertain'?
- The show has a lot of entertainment, it includes drama and action, which is entertaining to the audience. The show informs and educates because it educates on aliens, space, monsters etc.

4) How did the distribution of Class contribute to the failure of the show with audiences?
- It's airing time was very messy and unorganised. It started at 11:30 pm and since the target audience was a younger target audience (16-25) this was not an appropriate time. Mainly because younger audiences tend to sleep earlier because of school, events, education etc.

5) What advertising and marketing was used to try and promote Class to an audience? 

As Class was aimed at an older audience, there was a cl

ear shift in the way it was marketed from traditional Doctor Who episodes (on a Saturday early evening slot). Online marketing: Strong web presence.  Highly interactive.  Lots of video clips, interviews, fan art and fiction.  Trying to build brand loyalty BUT criticised for not making more of its link to Doctor Who.

1) What were the viewing figures for Class and why do you think it did so badly?

- Had an audience of 0.28 million, a share of 5.1% of total TV audience

2) What audience psychographic groups might particularly enjoy Class? 
- Doctor Who fans, because Class greatly links to Doctor Who, for example the school is class is the same as the one is Doctor Who, the genre etc.

3) What audience pleasures are offered by Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.

vicarious - feel the emotion of a person ensemble cat revenge ghosts

voyeristic - take pleasure in watching others succeeding/ failing  teen ta relatable 

visceral - physical thrill of watching something  sci-fi gore


5) How did fans in the 'Whoniverse' (also known as 'Whovians') react to Class? Watch the fan reaction video (and read the YouTube comments) embedded above or check the comments in the extension articles below to help with this.

- In the reaction video the guy talked a lot about how unlikable certain characters were and relationships. For example the relationship between Ram and April was a bit too sudden, they hadn't talked much before the got inter mate which made their relationship quite dis-likeable. People enjoyed the Corakinus and the dark, gloomy effects that was portrayed by the monsters.

Comparison: An Unearthly Child and Co-owner of a Lonely Heart

1) How are the technical conventions different between 1963 Doctor Who and 2016 Class (e.g. camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene)?
- The technical conventions that are different between 1963 Doctor Who and 2016 class is the representations of genders, disability, sexuality

2) What similarities and differences are there between An Unearthly Child and Co-owner of a Lonely Heart in terms of the science-fiction genre?

Unearthly Child is that both programs have a sci fi genre and entertain the audience. The difference is that An Unearthly Child has more stereotypes that are reinforced rather than subverted but in Class most of the stereotypes are subverted.

3) What similarities and differences are there between An Unearthly Child and Co-owner of a Lonely Heart in terms of how they meet the BBC's remit to inform, educate and entertain?
- An Unearthly Child informs and educates its audience because it talks about historical events and there will be time travel back to the stone age at the end of the two-parter. In Co-owner of a Lonely Heart, it entertains the audience because the immersive world and the multi strand narrative makes the audience able to escape reality

4) What similarities and differences can you find in terms of the audience pleasures for An Unearthly Child and Co-owner of a Lonely Heart?

An unearthly child provides more surviellnce whereas class provides none.
